Hi!

I run WinXP on a dual boot with Win2000. My machine is a SHUTTLE (little
box), P4, 512Mb RAM with a Maxtor 30Gig HD.

Problems started with Win2000 having start problems, blue screen and
all, and it got worse with time. However, it was generally ok on the
second boot, i.e. after a warm restart (using the reset button).

Then, hoping to fix the problem, I partitioned the drive and installed
WinXP. Initially it was fine, but after applying SP1 it started behaving
the same - start problems. Now it only starts on the second try, and
gives obscure blue-screen errors on the first (one being: ~corrupted
registry file had to be recovered...) Win2000 now doesn't start at all,
never.

I can only think of two options: Virus or Hardware fault. I have scanned
the machine for viruses using Symantec and F-Prot tools - no infection
found. So I have come to the conclusion that it is a hardware fault, but
which component could be causing this? Any Ideas? Memory, HD,
Motherboard or other?

Cheers.

Most likely faulty memory - swap out your memory to see if the problem
disappears.

While it is always a good idea to test RAM, I suspect you have a power
supply that is either failing or unable to handle all the devices in
your machine. There isn't enough juice to get the drive spinning the
first time, but momentum gets it going the second time. Just because it
is a new Shuttle doesn't mean the power supply isn't bad. Try replacing
it.
