Hi: Took the hard drive out of my old pc (running ME at
the time) Now I put it in a new pc (running xp home) as a
spare drive. I cannot access on my old hard drive my old
documents folders.Get the message "d:\documents and
setting\user name\my documents is not accessible. Access
is denied.

How can I regain access to these old folders?

Look up "take ownership" in XP's Help & Support. You need to take
ownership of those files.
