Sarah

I downloaded Ad-aware and Spybot... I am having problems
with random sites being saved to my favorites list (they
weren't fixed after running Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D or CW
Shredder). I also have these same random site saved to my
IE 6 address bar... I delete cookies, offline content,
temp internet items and history and it doesn't fix the
problem... does anyone have any other suggestions?

Yeah Sarah, I do. ;-)

How to surf the Internet more safely with Internet Explorer
http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/surf-safe.html

Basically, it suggests to Disable or at least set to Prompt the two items
known as ActiveX and Active Scripting. These are two very easy ways by which
"Drive-By Installers" put junk into your PC unbeknownst to you.

You can delete those Items from your Favorites folder, and if you are
careful where and how you surf, you should not see any further occurrences
of such things.

Furthermore, Microsoft has a handy tool that will add a menu choice Add to
Trusted Zone and Add to Restricted Zone to the Tools menu in Internet
Explorer. You can download this tool from the Microsoft Web site [127 KB].
It is called Internet Explorer 5 Power Tweaks Web Accessory, but it works
fine on Internet Explorer 6.

do you have spybots immunize feature running and block bad
pages?
or try a safer, more secure, open source browser, like
mozilla.org ''firefox''
and in ie ,tools, options, advanced ,uncheck both'''''enable
install on demand'''.apply.

A program called StartUp Cop from PC Mag utilities is very
handy to limit what your PC will run after a reboot. That,
in conjunction with SpyBot has been helpful for me to get
rid of that sort of junkware. Identify the malware is
good, but often there are creepy little re-installers that
check to see if the desired crapware is running. If not,
they re-download it. They can have sort of random names
like CP423.EXE. StartUp Cop can prevent them from running
and allow you to identify which programs to clobber. MS
Config is also handy for the same thing. It may take
several passes AND when you reboot, don't be connected to
the internet. That will slow down the crap ware as well.
Good luck. And let's all send a message to Bill and the
bright stars who invented a browser that allows this sort
of thing. When he was telling us how good the internet
was did he mention anything about how much time we will
waste un-installing this junk?
