This isn't my problem it's a friends, I just talked to
her on the phone. She's without internet access because
her cable company is flooded <G>

Her problem.

Last Thursday the text in all of her pop up
instruction/information boxes stopped displaying.

In the box that pops up for Norton's update.. everything
except text displays. The buttons are there and the check
boxes, but no text.

In the box that holds the send receive dialogue in
Outlook Express.. buttons only, no text.

In the box for Disk Clean-up (the sys utility that's part
of windows) box and buttons only, no text.

Anyone have ANY idea what's going on??

She's a really neat lady and I'd like to help her.. she's
not anywhere near me.. I'm in Nevada she's in
Pennsylvania.. so I can't sit and look at it.

Her computer is a Dell, about a year and a half old
running xp home edition

It sounds like a system font has gotten corrupted. The easiest thing for
you to tell her is to try a System Restore to a day when things were
working. Otherwise, if she is not computer-savvy, she should just call
a good local computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of
store). It will be quite hard for you to walk her through repairing her
fonts and doing troubleshooting on the phone.

Thanks.. the system restore was my first thought.. what
would cause that to happen? the system font going bad
like that.. she said that on last Thursday morning it
was ok, she shut it down, ran errands and when she came
back she noticed it.. nothing seemed to have happened..
it just went away..

There's no way for me to guess. After all, we're talking about a system
run by a user who isn't particularly computer-savvy, with details
transmitted to her friend over the telephone, who posted in a newsgroup
and someone who has never seen the computer answered. ;-)
