No NIC in Device Manager but everything is working!

Everything would appear to be working fine.
Went to Network Connections to disable the LAN (rather than turn off the
Netgear ADSL Router) only to discover it wasn't listed!
Then went to Device Manager and it isn't there either!
Everything is fine according to ipconfig as indeed it appears to be; there
is another machine connected and both can communicate OK. Adapter is an
integrated Broadcom Netxtreme Gigabit Ethernet on a MSI MS-6590 motherboard.
I'm running XP Pro SP2. I've no idea how long this has been the situation.
Any thoughts anyone??

Have now noticed that the Raid and SCSI controllers are 'missing' in Device
Manager as well!
