No floppy in the drive error

I am having a strange problem, if a floppy disk contains data i am
able to read the contents, but if I try to write data onto a floppy
disk 9/10 I get an error, the error normamly states

"there is no floppy in the drive"

Retry or abort, if I click on retry the data seems to get written but
on trying to open the diskette wether it's a boot up disk it would
say overflow problem.

Is anyone familiar with this type of errors, do I need to replace my
floppy drive

I am running a winxp 54 gb hard drive 512ram time computer
