No boot without chkdsk

XP Home Edition runs the POST. At the point where the WindowsXP splash screen should appear, it sits idle.

I have to run a repair through the recovery console and then run chkdsk.

It always finds errors then reboots normally.

Any ideas?

First, make sure your data is backed-up, sounds like an impending hard drive failure to me. Is chkdsk reporting any specific error or just the general error? You might want to check out your hard drive / computer manufacturer's websites for diagnostic tools and run them against the hard drive.

It just states that errors were found. No specific errors.

It always fixes the errors and boots normally but I have to follow this pattern each time.
