nicknames don't resolve in addressing emails

What's up with this feature? Nicknames used in the Contact list, don't
resolve to email addresses when using them in the TO: box in addressing
emails. "check names" doesn't help either.
 
They never did in the Outlook Address Book. Perhaps you were using IMO mode
before, which did not use the Outlook Address Book.
 
That would be because that's what Display Name is for.
You can open the contact and edit Display as then when
you open the To box for a new message, you can sort by
Display Name, but it will be the second column, not the
first.

You can also type the name and it will resolve when you
hit Tab. Problematic when you are using more than one.
Note that for it to work, you must have the nickname in
both fields in the Contact: Nickname and Display as.
