Ok, I have Windows XP Pro, and a new motherboard with 2 200 GB drives on
SATA striped to 1 400 GB drive. Since my xp doesn't recognize drives larger
than 137 GB without SP1, how do I set up a direct install of XP SP1 (or
anyother way that I will be able to set up on a large (400 GB) partition -
without introducing disk errors later on) onto the partition? If I just try
and create the partition through windows setup (boot off the cd), it only
recognizes 137 GB, and the rest is lost forever, even after upgrade to SP1.

thanks,
bob

Bob,

you need an XP SP1 install CD, one with SP1 already woven in.

The alternative (or workaround) is to install the operating
system into a smaller partition, then install SP1, then create a
larger partition for the rest of the disk.

Another workaround would be to install XP into a partition of
suitable size, then install SP1, then use a third party tool to
extend the partition, like BootIt NG or Partition Magic.

Just noticed your problem - we to are experiencing similar
diffs trying to install a single 160 gb drive on xp pro
which is only showing 131 gb and not the 160gb wve
installed the sp1 and its still not calibrating the 160
drive - if you have any suggestions or find any imfo out
could you please let us know - we will the same for you.

Ps we downloaded the sp1 from this site and installed it
direct from a cd it still does,nt work! barmy xp! or lack
of wisdom on our part!

Stef,

if Windows XP with SP1 doesn't create and install into a large
partition, the most likely culprit is the BIOS. You should look
for the latest BIOS for your motherboard and install (flash) it.

i was never able to figure out how to do it, though i DID RULE OUT a bios
problem. I think the only way that it can really be done is with a dupreped
directory on a 200(0 or 3) server and do a network install....
