New laptop

I just got me a new (used) Dell Inspron 1100 laptop from a place that
rents to own equipment and the laptop was previously owned by a person
Named April B. and I would like to change that to my name and rename
the default doccuments folder to my name, but how? Please help me
learn Windows XP Home Edition...

You can change the username in the Registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOrganization
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOwner

Forget the registry, set up a new User with your name and delete the old
user after transferring any documents you might have.

I went into the register and did a search for her name and found quit
a few entries throughout the system. What would happen if I went in
there and renamed her name to mine since the machine is mine now? It
this idea possible? Or what?

Change the two keys I listed to your info. That should do it.
