New document behaviour

Word 2003. When I create a new document via normal.dot the cursor is
initially placed at the top edge of the page above the header area (Print
Layout View). To correct this I must View | Header and Footer, then close the
Header and Footer popup. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? This
behaviour isn't encountered when I open normal.dot directly for editing. I
have added new stuff to normal.dot (toolbars, macros, etc.).

Thanks Jay,
This almost solved my problem. The trouble I'm having now is that the
normal.dot and Document 1.doc created from it aren't in sync. normal.dot has
"White space between pages" [checked]; Document 1 (when it's first created
from normal.dot) has it [unchecked]. Furthermore, I thought I would see if I
could reverse the sense and uncheck it in normal.dot, but I can't. I uncheck
it and save normal.dot. If I reopen normal.dot it's back checked again??
Somehow I really got things screwed up.
