network weirdness

I have a WinXP Pro laptop at work experiencing some weird network problems,
the machine can logon to the domain, run our CRM software, print / browse
the internet fine, receive and send emails ok.

BUT when I try to ping the machine, it doesn't respond to ping, also the
remote desktop doesn't work (I am on the same network). SP2 was installed
so I checked the firewall settings, it was on so i turned it off, still no
luck.

tried Microsoft support website, reset the tcp/ip stack, still no luck,
tried delete the network adaptor and add it back, no luck, and there are no
updated drivers (the laptop is using a Inter Pro / 100m mobile connection).

I don't think it's the firewall problem as i couldn't find any entries in
the firewall log (c:\windows\pfirewall.log), if anyone could shed some light
I would really appreciate.

Cheers,
Evans

Any other firewall software running? Norton? McAfee? Trend?

after further investigation... and running a port scan

it appears the laptop has all ports filtered, not closed, but filtered.

but i have checked the tcp/ip properties and that ip filtering is not on.

perhaps uninstall SP2 and reinstall?

I haven't had any problems with SP2 to speak of, not in this context,
anyway.
What antivirus software/suite are you running? A lot of those have firewalls
built in that are not immediately obvious.
I presume you can ping localhost from the PC in question -

Also, what do you see in your event logs?
What is between you & the switch/hub - any routers?
Do other PCs experience the same problem when plugged into your network
drop?
Does your PC experience the same problem when you take it to another
location on your LAN?
