Several computers on network. All but one works fine. (Can see shares within
workgroup.)

I can ping the missing one by IP address but not by computer name. What's
might be the problem?

Dear mr peanut,

Is there a firewall on this PC? I assume it has the same workgroup
name? The file system is NTFS? Simple file sharing is turned OFF,
yes? Its XP Pro?

Could be the workgroup name. Double check and make sure the case (as
in upper case, lower case) are the same on all PCs. This happened to
someone I know recently and it was a case problem.

Since my original post I have discovered that the problem disappears when I
shut down Norton Antivirus Auto Protect on the errant machine. I’d like to
keep the program. Any way to fix?

Perhaps Norton tech support can assist?

Norton Anit-Virus "Internet Worm" module, Internet Security and 360
all block the "NetBIOS" access to the PC "name." Change the rule to
allow access to/from your network addresses (192.168.0.1 -
192.168.0.254) and it should work.

Thanks bob, but

Easier said than done. They know about this NAV 2003 bug and they try to fix
it by remote system logon. Problem is, they do it from India using a dial-up
connection. After more than an hour of being bogged down, I quit. Guess I'll
just use a different AV program.

Thanks again. NAV 2003 has a bug. It won't alow addition of a new general
rule to worm protection options. Again, they know about this bug. They just
can't sem to do anything about it.

Sorry, that pretty much sums up why many folks here recommend avoiding
the products from that company.

Actually the issue here is Peter Norton made really good utilities, then
his company was bought by Symantic. That's where the grief begins.

I guess it time to consider:

1) Turn off Internet Worm protection. Use Zone Alarm Free instead.

2) Update NAV 2003 to NAV 2008. Five years of changes can make a
difference.

BTW: I do recall you can configure the Internet Worm rules.
