Network prob with WinME and WinXP

Hi group,

I was wondering whether you could help me with a very frustrating problem i
am having, trying to network my desktop, running on WinME, and my laptop
running on WinXP. I have Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Ethernet NIC's in both
comps, the desktop having a PCI card, the laptop's being integrated. I have
run the XP home networking wizard on both machines. I have a 5m crossover
cable running between the 2 NIC's.
The XP machine has no problem recognising the network, and shows the
workgroup in the 'Entire Network' folder. In the workgroup, the laptop
shows both itself and the desktop, but i am unable to access the desktop,
with an error msg coming up along the lines of "you don't have permission to
access this network resource, please contact your systems administrator" who
is, ahem, me! When trying to access the network from the desktop end, when
I click on the 'entire network' icon in 'my network places', it says "unable
to access network. This may be due to several reasons, press help for
details". Of course, the help troubleshooter is of no help AT ALL.

Please, if anyone can help me with this, it would be most appreciated.
