My question is more like, is .net a programming language? a Database?, etc....
and compare them to other similar products? what are the advantages and
disadvantages? My question is more general WHAT IS dot net? not the name

No it is a name for products which have for many people different meanings,
although you can say that connectivity is something that bundles it.

What those products as well connect is that it uses the Net frameworks, what
are OS layers on operating systems like XP, Windows2003 server, Windows
2000, Windows CE, Linux and more.

I hope that this gives an idea.
