.NET Passport + W. Messanger, something like AOL instant messanger?

A friend suggested that I get AOL instant messenger- which I remembered from
years ago on AOL. I found out I can download a version which doesn't require
AOL membership. I read their security policy and it looks like they'll
provide a lot of personal info to other businesses- so I haven't gotten it.

Then I notice that .NET Passport can work with Windows Messenger in a
similar way? I can't find much info on these topics- either with the XP help
area built into XP nor in my MS big book on XP.

So, can these items work so that I can do instant messaging with people
using AOL instant messenger?

A few years ago I did begin to check out .NET passport and I.M. but
something about it turned me off- too complicated or something. At least the
I.M. I used on AOL several years ago was easy and fun to use.

Here is a site with information on .NET Passport:
http://www.passport.net/Consumer/default.asp?rollrs=11&lc=1033
As with AOL, I would check the information needed to signup and their
privacy policy. If you have a Hotmail account, the email address for that
account is a .NET Passport and your email password is the .NET Passport
password.

You already have Windows Messenger as part of Windows XP. You need a .NET
Passport and password to sign on to Windows Messenger.

I am not familiar with interoperability with AOL Instant Messenger.
