What is the best laptop around for around £1,500 - i need one for university, and would ideally like a gig of RAM, a 17" screen and a VERY good graphics card (for a laptop)

Figure can be a few quid either side, but i want to be able to play games. Am interested at what is the best for the money around at the moment.

Chris,

This request of your would be better handled with its own thread, so I decided to split your post on another thread and created it for better responses ;)

lol. the inspiron 9400 would be fantastic, or even the 9300. Specs would be as follows once you've configured it; (I cant get rid of the white rows sorry!) but that spec is at standard. You might want to check out the info on the new Intel ® Core™ Duo Processor T2400. Anyways....just an idea at 1389 with 1 year collect and return warranty

Chris,
I have the XPS - the sound of these things are fantastic, not like any other laptop, theres clarity. My mate uses the model down from this for sound producing it should do the trick. One thing to look into might the bluetooth upgrade. Its all built in, and with a bluetooth mouse, it definately turns heads. It has a memory card reader (SD Only) and much more to offer, definately worth the mo-honey. (the screen will make you want to cry! - its a ******* to clean, but its worth it!)

I must admit, I can't fault the high end Dell laptops or the Toshiba that Quad pointed out. However, I'm just wondering why you'd want a laptop for uni? They are great space savers, but I promise something that big isn't going to be portable (no way you could bring it in to uni for lectures/work reguarly).

I know a few people that have had laptops at uni, and they have been targets for getting thing stolen - as there are some dodgy characters around halls. You could get a top of the range desktop for 700 less, which will be very handy for the first term parties ;)

Just my $0.02 of course ;)

Ian is right, the XPS weighs in about 4.1 kg, its not heavy but its not something I can throw around, for a 17" screen it will need a special bag starting at about 50 quid.

Ian - remember he's in uni, they need any excuse possible to get a new gadget. He may be saying its for "uni" but what he really means is that its for gaming, music, videos and of course photoshoping your friends body behind the picture of hitler. Lol, pls take this comment very lightly uni readers!

Yeha drainedsoul's comment would fit Mr Postill perfectly.

He does too much photoshopping at college :p

i need something i can take home on the train/coach so it would seem a desktop is out of the question. I can't take my car to Uni so theres no other way of transport... Hence why i'm looking for a desktop replacement laptop!

do you need it to take to lectures? if so, the dell might not be the best idea, but for journeys on the train its not too bad, depending on how many bags you gotta carry!

It might be worth getting some huge chains, and make your computer desk look worse than marilyn manson, for security purposes more than anything. Ok everyone can get thru chains, but the look is what normally puts people off.

why not invest in a year's supply of bodyguards? they can stand around looking mean all day and all night long. you better keep up the payments though...

Why don't you just get picked up by someone, Cambridge isn't that far away...

And at least that way you don't have to lug your stuff around on the train/coach.

The parents would not be willing to make a 6 hour round trip to get me...and repeat to take me back!!

coach is only 18 quid return.

I will have my own room so should be safe in there, locked.

Mucks - looks good but is it 802.11G as thats the way APU supply the internet ;)

I've already invested in the classic like a year ago, its fantastic stuff! hl2 was a little hard, but i worked my way around it and on the 3rd go i completed the "2". Unfortunately it looked more like a "3". I was never meant to be a graphic designer!
