It would certainly help if you were to mention what these processes/programs
are! Then, others that have had the same problem with them may have a few
hints for you.

Well, configure the undesirable programs that have an option to do so that
they NOT load on Windows startup!

Use msconfig.exe to see what gets loaded and choose which ones NOT to load
anymore. Use this only if the program itself provides no option to [not]
load on Windows startup.

I cannot believe the irrelevancies some people post in response to
questions. Anyway, there are two sources for memory consumption in the
background (excluding programs you are running yourself): startup
applications, and system services. Both can be controlled from
Start/Run command/type: msconfig [enter]. Select the startup tab.
Uncheck those programs you do not want or need to start. Well, most of
those are indecipherable so use this site as a guide.
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php
Make a note of the controlling application so you can manually start
the program and select from the program options not to start
automatically at startup.
System services can be modified to some extent in msconfig; but the
complete list is in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Use
this site as a guide to which services can be disabled, manually, or
automatically started.

1. You do not want to try and get 'free' Physical memory. That is
really a misnomer, and should be 'memory for which no possible use can
be found at the moment'. Windows tries to keep all of RAM in use, and
will instantly drop trivial uses when a more important one comes along.
See www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

2.There are a *lot* of processes in Task manager that you have never
heard of - mainly essential system services. But Start - Run -
MSConfig.exe and review the Startup page for things that are being
started that you have no use for, and uncheck them. For example Task
bar help items for video and sound cards.
