Hello everyone!
I'm shopping for a new computer, and I figure I want to go with building my
own system. The computer I use today is using Windows XP, installed with an
upgrade disc over Win98. What I now wonder is, can I use the same Win98 disc
I used to upgrade this computer on my new one (with a new XP Upgrade disc)?
Short: Can the same Windows 98 disc be used for several Windows XP upgrade
discs?

yes, but you need a new XP upgrade for each computer. Moral
issue, you should have a different W98 disk for each
upgrade, but the install doesn't check for that. Let your
conscience be your guide.

I understand now. I used to have an old computer with 98, which didn't use
this disc. That makes two discs. Moral issue solved. Kind of. Thank you for
the answer Jim!

Only if the Windows 98 is a retail version otherwise it goes out the
door with the old PC.

Can you get away with doing it? Yes.

Can you do it legally, in accordance with the license agreement?
No. When you do an upgrade, the operating system copy used to
qualify for the upgrade becomes bound to the new operating
system, and is no longer available for other use. You can't use
it on another computer, sell it, give it away, etc.

No, not legitimately.

If you used an Upgrade version of WinXP, the license for Win98
will have been subsumed (become an integral part of) by the WinXP
Upgrade license. Basically, you have no license to use the Upgrade
without there first being an earlier, qualifying OS license
_permanently_ in place on the computer.

Not legitimately; using a version of windows as support for an Upgrade
officially ties it to that upgraded system as part of the license for
that, so it is not allowed to use it for another.
