Multiple Oracle Clients

How can I point a specific .Net application to a specific Oracle Client (through the Microsoft managed .Net provider for Oracle) when there are multiple versions of the Oracle Client (e.g. 8i and 9i) installed on the computer?

If this cannot be done on an application-by-application basis, what to I need to do to configure ADO.Net to use the 9i Oracle Client when there are also other versions of the Oracle Client installed on that computer

Please do not simply say that multiple Oracle Clients are not supported - I have no option but to have 8i and 9i Clients installed at the same time, so I at least need to understand how ADO.Net locates the Oracle Client.
