I uninstalled a bunch of programs that were conflicting with each other and
somehow deleted some windows components. I keep getting a runtime error for
msmsgs.exe. I uninstalled messenger and re-installed it and keep getting
the error. I think I need to restore windows components, but don't have an
XP cd (my computer didn't come with one) Is there some way to restore
deleted windows components?

Hi,

Start/run "sfc /scannow"

Should you be prompted for a CD, point it to the I386 folder on your hard
drive (likely under C:\Windows).

Get with the customer service of the company whose system you purchased.
Explain your problem. They will either supply you with an OEM Windows XP
CD, or a System Recovery CD. Getting a system without a Windows XP CD, or
at least a System Recovery CD is scary, when a virus or worm can easily
trash your system. How are you expected to recover or reinstall? HP got
some really bad backlash when they started shipping without CDs, and putting
the recovery files on a hidden partition. Most of my clients who had
purchased HP systems at that time ran into problems where they couldn't
access the hidden partition, and all had to ship their systems back to HP
for "repair." When the systems were returned, system recovery disks were
supplied. To save a couple of dollars by not supplying the CDs, HP lost
much more in "repair" shipping costs, then originally supplying CDs as they
should have.
