About 7 or 8 month ago I got a copy of Window XP Pro, and
Office for XP. I installed them both on my old
computer. It sort of work OK, but ran a little slow. I
now have a newer computer, used but newer, and doesn't
have Windows XP installed on it. A friend said Symantec
had a program that would move XP, Office XP, and all my
other programs to the newer computer, so I bought
Symantec System Works. I tried using the Ghost program,
which seemed to be working, but now the hard drive on my
newer computer doesn't work. What do I do now? How do I
fix it.

Need a bit more information Bob. You say your hard drive doesn't work. What
exactly is happenning? Do you get any error messages? The more information
you can give us the better we wil be able to advise you.

You need to install both (XP Pro & Office) on the new PC after backing up
any data on it that you want.
Ghost will copy from one disk to another, but unless the hardware is exactly
the same on both PC's, then when the XP that was on your old PC starts up in
the new one, its going to get all confused, and fall over.

So, reinstall.

In theory you should also remove XP and Office from your old PC though that
wont prevent them working on the new one.

Bob -
I don't know just what procedure you used to transfer
your old hard drive to the newer one using Ghost, but
properly done it should be all OK. I use Ghost (disk to
disk copy) as the basis for my back up program and it
works great. When you do get it working correctly, you
will almost certainly be asked by Windows to re-activate,
but that works quite easily and well. Give it another try.

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM licenses are not
transferable to a new motherboard), unless the motherboard in the
newer PC is virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers,
same BIOS version, etc.) to the one on which the WinXP installation
was originally performed, you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a.
in-place upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also require re-activation, unless you have a Volume
Licensed version of WinXP Pro installed. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Bear in mind this was a Ghost from a disk on one computer to a disk on
another...that *isn't* going to work great!
