missing shortcuts and dll files

I am a beginer with XP. bought computer with OEM's XP on but no disks. Have a major problem as am now getting errors showing missing shortcuts and DLL files. Over and above all of my restore points have been erased and many programs including virus scanner and firewall cannot be located and the system (add/remove programs) will not let me re-install as it still reports the programs present but cannot uninstall them
Any ideas as i am stuck

Start/run "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). See where this gets you.
