When doing a weekly Norton SystemWorks Checkup today, it
found a missing file: mscoree and gave the following
location:
C:\programfiles\Common
Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0701\Intel32
\DotNetInstaller.exe (I may have a space or two wrong in
there)
According to Norton report, it is of Medium Importance.
When Googling for the file, I found a place to download
it, but it says it is for .NET - which I do not use. (1)
How important is not having this file? If I do need to
download and install it, what would be the steps in order
to get it in the correct spot?
Thanks in advance.

I suppose you just install the .NET Framework at Microsoft. It will come up as available at the Windows Update site if you haven't installed the latest version 1.1.

Do you even have this folder tree? I assume you have C:\Program Files\Common Files but the rest? Are you using the .NET version of InstallShield?

I saw that last time I scanned for critical updates, but
it said it was not necessary, and I did not know enough
about it to know whether or not I should install, so did
not. What's it all about, anyway?

Yes - I have the whole string, right down to the .exe file.

Are you using the .NET version of InstallShield?

I don't know. To my knowledge I've never used
anything .NET, but how would I know?

About a month ago, I installed a trial program that had to
download something about .NET, but I did not like the way
the program took control of IE, so I uninstalled it and
the .NET immediately - doesn't seem as that would be
related to this missing file, though, because I've run the
Norton SystemWorks scan at least 4 times since, with this
being the first time it's found any missing file.

Thanks to both of you guys. I downloaded the
redistributabland installed. Did a rescan and it is now
showing all files to be where they're supposed to be, so I
guess all is OK.

mscoree.dll is used by all .NET programs to start off
the .NET execution engine. Though it should be in your
<windir>\system32 folder. Without it all .NET programs
on launch will complain that it's missing. If it's not in your
system32, then you can always download and run the .NET
redistributable to put it back in there:
