microtek scanmaker 8700 problem

I'm trying to scan a bunch of standard 35mm negatives using a Scanmaker
8700, using the glassless fittings, and basically coming up with a
blurriness problem, suggesting that the scanner isn't focusing on the film
properly - using the normal positive flatbed gets 100% crystal clear
results. The results aren't horrific, but they're no where near what I think
is expected from this type of film and hardware.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Are my expectations unrealistic? I
called tech support, who suggested sending it in for repair and
recalibration (and a general service, as it hasn't been serviced in four
years). The problem is that it's no longer under warranty, so that would
cost me a fair whack (~£150). Is that the only thing to try?
