I asked this question a little over a week ago and nobody replied, I cannot
believe no one knows of any software which will format my memory card (multi
media card in a reader).

For my purposes (using it in an mp3 player, Ondio 128), the WinXP built-in
formatter does NOT work. I need to have more control (chunk size etc) for it
to format it correctly for my mp3 player. Are there any alternatives to the
WinXP one ??

Cheers

By "chunk" do you actually mean allocation unit size (sometimes referred to
as cluster size)
If so, you can control this with the built in tool.
Look at the /A option on the command line version of the format command, It
also appears in the user interface as Allocation Unit size.

Andy,

You asked about "chunk size" control in your post. If this is what for
disks we call "allocation unit size" or "cluster size" then just select the
size you want when you either run the command line tool to do a format
Start ... Run ... cmd
then type in format /?
to see how to format a drive/device with a specific allocation unit size.
If you want to use the graphic tool then there is a drop down box where you
can select the allocation unit size.

Still unsure. I get the cmd prompt but cannot figure out what to put in it.
My SD card is in the card reader J:/ drive, so, say i want to format it in
the J: drive (32mb) to FAT (Not FAT32), what would i exactly type in ??

Sorry for my ignorance, but you probably know a lot more than i do !

Cheers

Too complicated for us novices, i have tried EVERY combination and just keep
getting errors, ideas anyone ??. Format J/FS:FAT /V:TEST /A:1024 - error !,
cannot figure out which letters are needed and where the spaces come etc.

Thanks

Your command example you typed should read

format j: /FS:FAT /V:TEST /A:1024

you missed the colon after the J
there are spaces between each option.

If you are still struggling maybe you should read the manual that came with
your device to see what they say about formatting it or consult their web
site for more information.

Their technical support is non-existant and there is definitely no option to
format from within the mp3 player.

Well thanks to your help i now have the card working !!!!!!! - I did miss
out the colon (silly mistake !!!!). For your info it only works when i do a
FAT (Not FAT32), and do /A:2048. So when i do it in WinXP, that can't be
using 2048 as default.

Thanks again for persevering with me on this one !!!

Cheers
Andy
