I installed all the latest security updates on my XP professional at home and
now nothing will load on the PC anymore. Th PC will boot as per nomal and up
comes the desktop wall paper and then nothing ... Not a single icon,
taskbar, star menu ... nothing. Thee are no error messages either.
Ctrl+Alt+Del produces a message saying "Taskbar has been disabled by your
administrator" (that's me). Afer playing around for hours I've managed to
bring up IE via some rather unusal means and it appears that the computer has
booted but nothing and I mean not a single process has actually been started.
If I navigate to any program exe it works but I have not been able to start
Windows Explorer so the desktop etc. remains empty. Has anyone seen this
before and know a fix or if you have any useful ideas on what to do next I
would appriciate them a lot. BTW, there was about 20 updates so removing
them may not be easy if I have to do it one by one ...

Thanks

For all users (even if you create a new one) and even in safe mode?

Hi Shenan,

Yep. I managed to greate another Admin user (I only had the one role prior)
and that's how I managed to get to task manager and see that there was no
processes running at all ... It is truly wierd as every program I've tried
via C:\Program Files\ like Word, Excel etc. will work as per normal, I can
even get to Internet but if I try to start Windows Explorer via the exe
nothing happens.

Cheers,

Hi Steve,

My problem turned out to be a virus (actually few). I think it was called
something like" DesktopHijack". Once I removed it using Norton and some
manual intervention all is back to normal. It seemed that the re-booting of
the machine when I installed the updates activated the virus. Let me know
how you get on.

Cheers,
Mika
