in attempting to solve a mouse conflict in device manager (ps/2 vs. usb) i
uninstalled both devices. after reboot, device has tripled in duplicate, new
and unknown devices. the original devices have bold icons, while the
duplicates, new additions and unknown devices have faded icons. all the faded
icon device return this error code: Currently, this hardware device is not
connected to the computer. (Code 45). as i didn't add any devices, i'm
puzzled?! thank you all for your assistance.

You can remove the faded entries. Right-click and select "Uninstall".
This often happens with USB devices as well.
