My computer sometimes emits a blaring alarm (think home security alarms) that
cannot be turned off unless I shut down the computer (and sometimes I have to
wait awhile before I can start up again). Although not limited to, the
computer usually sounds its alarm when I am trying to play a children's game
CD or when I am downloading pictures from my phone or when I am running a
virus check.

Any ideas why this may be happening & how I can prevent it?

Thanks

Yves is probably right. Sounds like a temperature over-heating problem.
Consult your hardware manufacturor's specs on the normal and max
operating temperatures of your system, then change the settings for the
alarm(usually found somewheres in BIOS).
