Losing Internet Connection When Computer Sits Idle

Hello,

I see someone else has had this problem but no one replied, hopefully I'll
have better luck.

I have the internet through cable. As long as I'm using my computer/internet
regularly there is no problem. But if I stop using my computer for an hour or
more then come back, the internet will no longer work. The "Local Area
Connection" icon in my system tray reads that I'm connected, but if I try to
access any web sites etc, they will all time out. This of course also effects
any internet software such as Outlook which can't check e-mail etc. The only
way to get it to work again is to Log-off and on or restart.

What would be causing the internet to go dead after the computer sits idle
for awhile? (Just to be clear, by idle I don't mean Stand By, although it
will lose it's connection after sitting in stand by also)

Help please!

Thanks,
Peter

There were a couple of versions of zonealarm that did that. If you are using
zonealarm for your firewall, make sure you have the latest version
available. Or try temporarily exiting zonealarm when the problem happens and
try to connect to a web page.

Thanks. I am using ZoneAlarm but I do have the latest update. I will run an
experiment though and either do as you said and turn off ZoneAlarm the next
time my connection goes dead, or I will turn ZoneAlarm off before I leave for
an extended period of time and see if the connection is dead or working when
I get back.

Hopefully this will fix the problem, but I'd hate to have to get rid of
ZoneAlarm.

Does anyone know of any other reasons a connection may die?

Thanks!

Are you using Internet Explorer? If I remember right IE has a setting that
will disconnect your Internet connection after a period of time. It was
meant for dial-up but it might be causing your problem. I don't have a
modem here so can't really verify that at the moment. You might also try
using a different browser for a test.

Try going to device manager..right click your NIC..properties and make sure
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is not checked.
