I recently purchased a Lexar 1GB JumpDrive and had problems with it
being detected on some of my USB connectors (Dell Monitor USB
connections). After contacting Lexar about the problem I noticed the
plug dimention on the USB connector was 10mm versus the USB 2 "A"
connector plug specification of 12mm. I assume this contributes to
the variable connection success I have. Anyone else experience this
problem?

The monitor ports are probably passive (not powered) and the drive
requires a powered port. If you don't have a powered port on the front
of your PC case you can use a cable to connect the drive to a rear port.

Thanks for the reply. I did try the drive using the cable but it
still didn't work. I can connect the drive to the computer front and
rear connectors and it works fine. It doesn't work on the monitor
ports or with two different cables I have, connected to the computer
front/rear connections. It is much more convienent using the monitor
connections though. It isn't that I can't use the device at all but I
wonder why they designed it with a shorter plug dimension.

Connecting to the monitor ports isn't going to work. I don't understand
why it's not working with a cable connected to a mobo connector though.
I have a flash drive that I connect that way without any problems. What
did Lexar say?

The monitor ports have worked fine with previous flash drives I had and
I'm sure it would work fine with this unit if the plug length was the
spec'd 12mm. It's a matter of the connector shell design accepting
the plug length of 10mm and allowing the electrical connection
required. Lexar said send it back for a replacement. I wrote back
that I don't want an exact replacement if the plug length is 10mm by
design. As an experiment try taking a drive you have and blocking the
plug length to 10mm and test it on several USB connector types and see
if you get proper connection. I will bet that cable type connections
won't work. I just took my cable connector with a soft plastic outter
shell and connected it to the monitor. I then connected the drive to
the cable, using some force to insert the drive into the cable
connection beyond the normal stopping point and acheived connection but
it was lost when I released the pressure. It is strange what that
additional 2mm will do to the functionality of the drive over various
connectors.
