My sister-in-law has dial-up internet connection and lately it won't stay
connected but a few minutes until it disconnects. If we open Explorer,
close it, and then try to open Outlook Express, you have to dial up again.
What could be causing this? Could it be her internet provider's problem?
The reason I asked this is because she recently had several viruses on her
computer and I brought it to my house to clean it up for her, the internet
connection works fine here at my house (I have cable internet). During the
cleanup, I first turned on her XP firewall and then I turned off System
Restore, then I ran Stinger, CWShredder, several on-line virus scans,
Adaware 6, and Spybot Search & Destroy. Could any one of these things
messed with her dial-up connection? It works fine with cable connection.
Thanks for your help.

Check Internet Options control panel, Connections tab. Make sure there
is no proxy unless one is specifically required by the ISP. Select
Never Dial... . Use the modem connection to establish the connection
independently of IE, OE, and to shut it down also.

Check the Modem control panel, there is a setting for disconnecting the
connection after so many minutes of idle. Set this to Never...

Q

There are several options here. first check her settings
under connections to determine if she has set to
disconnect after a certain amount of time. IE tools, ie
options, click the connection tab, then settings, click
the advance tab next to the username and password then
uncheck disconnect if idel for NN minutes. In OE open it
then click tools options, then the connections tab and
uncheck the hang up after send and receive.
If these are not set, as I have mentioned above, then I
would recommend that you download and install the latest
driver. Also see if there is a V.92 update for her modem.

Good Luck
