If the other icons are still there:
Right click on your desktop and click Properties in the menu.
Under the Desktop tab click "Customize Desktop"
Under the General tab you can select/deselect the icons that appear.
If there are NO icons:
Right click on desktop go to "Arrange Icons By..."
Under that menu click "Show Desktop Icons"
