iTunes 8.2 for either Windows XP or Windows Vistaâ€

Okay I have a notebook with Windows XP. In order to restore my iPod, I needed
to download the newest version of iTunes (which is iTunes 8.2). When I
attempted to install, an error message came up and said that I could not
download iTunes because it has an unknown publisher. The error message said:

Windows has found a problem with this file.
Name: iTunesSetup.exe
Publisher: Unknown
(No options were listed)

Next, I tried disabling the firewalls, the digital signatures, and other
security options on my computer and then reinstalling iTunes. The same error
message came up.

Then I tried to import the Apple Publisher Certificate under my Trusted
Publishers and was successful. BUT, when I tried once again to download
iTunes the same error message came up.

After several attempts, I decided just to start fresh and download iTunes
onto an entirely different computer, my Windows Vista notebook, but the same
error message came up. I then tried to download it on my sisters Windows XP
notebook, which like my XP previously had iTunes installed on it already, but
again the same message came up.

I finally resorted to call Apple Tech Support with my problem. He said that
this is a fairly common problem and told me that if the error message comes
up, just to click RUN ANYWAY. I told him that the error message that came up
gave me no options. He was unsure of what to do, for he had never dealt with
this problem. He then told me to completely uninstall iTunes on the Windows
XP that held my iPod info and library and then reinstall it and it should
work.

I did as he said and completely uninstalled iTunes and attempted, once
again, to download iTunes 8.2 and, as you may have guessed, the same error
message came up. I am running out of ideas, so if you could please help me,
it would be greatly appreciated.

Did you by chance accidentally download the 64-bit iTunes version?

Get a link for the correct file from the Apple support guy - have him email
you the link for the *correct* file and download location.

At first I thought that might be the problem, but it wasn't. I tried downloading both of the versions but neither of them work.

Download a program call IZARC. Inside the iTunesSetup.Exe are
individual .Msi ( Microsoft Installer ) modules for each component
that makes up the iTunes package. Once you have the .msi modules
extracted Right Click on iTunes.msi and from the context menu take
"Install". You can repeat this for each of iTunes components you
want on your system.

be directed to the install location, rather than the way it works now;
if iTunes is installed to E:, other components are still installed to C:
(i.e. Quicktime). So I've had to install the two separately so QT gets
installed to E: also.

iPhone, Apple Updater.....Works very well. Ed Bott wrote an

I don't know if this is new for iTunes 8.2, but I just used Apple
Software Update and selected "download only" from the Tools menu to get
the latest update.

This put all 4 msi files, uncompressed and ready to use (plus something
named SetupAdmin.exe) in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update

Of course, this was an 85 MB download. Perhaps if you go to Apple.com
you can find the update in compressed form. I assume that SetupAdmin
deletes the msi files from the folder when it's done.
