Is it just me or is it WindowsXP?

For my virgin test drive using this site, I would just like to comment on the
sigh of relief that came over me to actually see that there are other people
having the same #$%^** problem with their CD and DVD drives that I have been
having for approximately 9 out of the 13 months since I purchased my Dell
computer with WindowsXP Professional. I have been trying to correct this
malfunction (as well as a spattering of other fun stuff) for literally nine
months or more and have yet to get it resolved. The loops I face with Tech.
Supports is astounding. Yahoo tells me to call MicroSoft who tells me to
call MSN who tells me to call Dell who tells me to call.... all I know is
I'm about to call an ambulance for the blood pressure rising in me as well as
the desire to hurt Bill Gates! All I want to do is listen to, burn to, and
view CD's and DVD's!!! With so many other people complaining about this
issue, I'm curious as to why WHOEVER is responsible for this glitch hasn't
done something about it. Computers suck more than not. Thanks for letting
me whine. I'm assuming this TEST PAGE will be forgiving if I've crossed any
lines.

And which ones of the demonstration and trial applications
from Dell are being used to listen to CD's, viewing DVD's
and burning CD-RW's and DVD-RW's? It isn't really a Windows
XP issue but more of a Dell issue and whether it supports
the applications it puts on to the desktop. Do yourself a
favor...visit Dell's tech support center and download the
real manual that Dell has stashed away instead of the quick
instruction set that typically accompanies the system from
the factory.

You are certainly not the only person who faces frustration over
problems with Windows. There are alternatives (mac, linux), but that is
another discussion. If you would like some help with your problem(s)
here, please post them and we can give it a shot.

Cathlene,

I have 2 Dell computers that I purchased within the last 3 years. Both were
causing me problems with CD and DVD reader/writers. Conversations with Dell
and internet searches looking for solutions were fruitless. I recently
purchased Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 at Costco for $59 and installed it on
both computers (they're on a wired home network). Since then, I have not
had a single problem with my drives - no system crashes or inconsistent
reading or writing. Running a fully featured, retail version of the
software has made a significant difference. The bonus is the software has
some great features if your working with digital pictures and/or video. I'd
look at it for no other reason than to bring your system up on the latest
drive handling software and you get some excellent digital picture/video
tools. Hope this helps.

As you do not say what the problems you have are, about all I can
suggest is a look at my page on this - http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm

For years I've had the good fortune of getting paid to go to homes of
folks who bought new Dells w/cdrom problems. Put in our cd drive, works
fine. I've seen many a red face when the customer calls Dell while I'm
there :)

Since the pc is new, they dont want to wait 3 days for the "dell"
authorized tech to come out. Many of these customers call the sales dept
for satisfaction and generally, dell will come out and do the right
thing and even put some bonus hardware. You have to be insistant.
