1. A few months ago I opened Internet Explorer to find
that my homepage had been changed to a site called "all
about searching". I didn't make this change.
2. I went into Windows XP control panel and changed my
homepage back to where I had it.
3. When I opened Internet Explorer again it opened to
the "all about searching" page instead of the homepage
that I designated.
4. I have changed homepage setting in control panel, but
it won't accept the change and defaults to "all about
searching".
5. But the situation gets worse.
6. A taskbar for this website pops up automatically on my
screen.
7. And then pop-up ads start appearing at the rate of one
every 3-4 seconds.
8. If I shut down the "all about searching" taskbar, the
pop-up ads continue to show up on my screen.
9. And get this. If I shut down Internet Explorer as
well, if my phone line is still connected to the
internet, even with the browsers closed, pop-up ads
continue to show up on my desktop at the rate of one
every 3-4 seconds. The only way to stop it is to
disconnect from the internet.
10. I have tried repeatedly to uninstall what appears to
be the culprit program through control panel "Search
Assistant-My Web Search" and "My Web Search(popswatter)"
to no avail.
When I do try to uninstall Search Assistant-My Web
Search, a window opens. It is blank, but in the blue bar
across the top of the window, here's what it reads:
res://C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS\SrchAstt\1.bin\mwssrcas.dll/101
When I try to uninstall My Web Search(popswatter), I get
this:
res://C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsbar.dll/101
Also, when I try to uninstall these programs I'm given
the option of clicking on a hyperlink that says "click
here for support information". When I click it, a small
window opens labeled "support info". I am instructed to
to go to the website http://help.mywebseach.com. When I
go to the site and am given the option of uninstalling
the program, and do so, it appears to be uninstalling the
program, but it isn't, and I'm back to square one.
11. Question 1: How can I uninstall these two programs
and regain control of my computer?
As it stands, I cannot go on the internet-even google's
pop-up blocker does not stop the pop-p ads from
oblierating everything on my screen. It somehow even
bypasses that.
