Invalid Product Key

When I bought my computer it was loaded with ME but offered a special on an upgrade to XP. I bought the upgrade (10/28/01) but never did anything with it. Now I need to load it in order to access a vpn account with my employer.
I went to download it and it keeps saying I have an invalid product key. I called the Microsoft support number and they won't help as it was part of my original purchase
Does anyone know anything about this and what I might possibly do to correct it. I have my receipt and the product key I was issued
Thanks
Jan

Contact the company that sold you the invalid Product Key and request
a valid Product Key. If the company is unwilling to help, you're just
out of luck since Microsoft does not offer support for OEM versions
of Windows XP. To be on the safe side, purchase a "retail version"
next time and you'll have access to Microsoft support.

Thanks Steve. I appreciate your help but these articles don't apply. This is a valid XP Upgrade that has never been loaded onto my computer. As I said...I have my receipt and the 25 digit product key it asks for. I also have the serial number, product ID (OEM) and certificate number as shown on my order receipt from emachines.
I will try to do as Jym says and change the numbers to letters and vice versa. Maybe that will help.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question though.

Greetings --

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5,"
or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense
to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation.
Also, be sure that your CapsLock if _off_ while entering the Product
Key.

Bruce,
Thanks so much for the reply. My anti-virus software was running so that might have been the problem. This is a legal copy of XP and was sold to me in conjunction with an eMachine and Microsoft special offer on butying my eMachine computer. I am going to try your suggestions tomorrow and see if I can get it up and going.
Thanks Again
