Internet Explorer 6 stops responding

I have a new HP laptop with XP installed. When using the
internet after about 6 or so clicks Internet Explorer
stops on the last page, no loading bar appears, DONE
appears on the taskbar but an egg timer appears in the
header bar. I have tried applying a patch which should
fix this problem Q818506.exe but it comes up with the
message you need Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
installed which it is and then exits.

Any clues anyone.

I have managed to apply Q818506.exe after reinstalling IE6
SP1 but to do this I had to use 318378 to amend the
registry and then do the install and then immediately
apply Q818506. Unfortunately IE6 still fails to go any
further than about 6 clicks.

HELP

I have managed to apply Q818506.exe

Why are you trying to install that patch?
It seems to have been superseded by 831167
which is now available as a security patch
from Windows Update. (See below)

In fact if you had 831167 installed previously
that is what the error message you got
should have been saying (and should be interpreted
as meaning).

Ignore the titles of the following articles and look at
the version and modification dates of the common
module.

Thanks for this Robert, unfortunately this update patch
hasn't made the slightest bit of difference.

Any clues anybody, I'm at my wits end.

Hi,

I'm experiencing a similiar problem with applying this
patch, Q818506.exe, getting the message IE 6 SP 1 must be
installed. I have IE 6 SP 1 version 6.0.2800.1106. You
said you were able to apply it by amending 318378 to the
registry. What does this do? Can you tell me how to do
this?

Thanks,

Natalie

Natalie,

I strongly suspect that my comments to anonymous may apply to you too.

If you are unsure about what your current maintenance level is
copy the following script fragment to your Address bar, press Enter
and copy the results in a reply.

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

(It's just a convenient way of capturing the Update Versions: list
from IE's Help, About display.)

To repeat, if you see Q831167 in there and you find that wininet.dll
is the version that that article mentions (or greater), then you should not
try to install a patch which refers to an earlier version of the same module.

By using 318378 you would back off *all* your maintenance (supposedly,
since the article doesn't refer to that possibility).

Hi Robert,

I do have Q831167 installed. Here's what I got after
executing javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion
SP1;Q818529;Q822925;Q828750;Q824145;Q832894;Q831167;

The version of wininet.dll is greater than the version of
IE I have installed. So your saying this is why I can't
apply this patch and the bug fix in the patch I'm trying
to apply, Q818506.exe, is suppose to be included in
Q831167? I'm still having the problem described with
Q818506 even though I supposedly have a more current
version than the one this was suppose to fix. Do you know
of anything, files etc.., I can check related to Q818506
in order to verify that I have this fix installed?

Thanks for your help,

Natalie

Let's verify that you have Q831167 installed. Then that implies
that the source changes from the fix for Q818506 are included
(unless that hotfix was regressed in deference to the priority of the
security fix, hopefully not).
The version of wininet.dll is greater than the version of
IE I have installed.

That's not good. What version do you have installed?
Do you have security programs installed (e.g AntiVirus, etc.)
which would have interfered with the correct updating of that module?

Perhaps you should try disabling all your security programs,
uninstall Q831167 and reinstall it. Then, only after the patch has been
successfully and completely (check this) installed, re-enable said security
programs.

You can let Windows Update or Automatic Updates reoffer the update
but make sure that your connection is firewalled before you connect
to the Internet. Use XP's firewall (Advanced tab of Connection Properties).
