Hi,

I have XP Upgrade CD, but am having problems running the upgrade
installation when booting from CD directly. Seems like each time I run it,
it stops with a different file "corrupted" (acpi.sys, etc.).

So I wanted to try to do this from the hard drive.

I copied the I386 directory to my D: drive, and I copied Smartdrv.exe to
I386 directory on hard drive.

I cd'ed to D:\i386, and typed "winnt".

The Windows XP Personal Setup start, and asks me to press Enter (and it
shows D:\i386 as the directory).

When I press Enter, at the bottom, it shows that it copies some files, then
the display says:

"Please wait while Setup copies files to your hard disk"

and the bottom line of display is blank.

There is no disk activity light after that. I've been waiting for quite
awhile.

Is this normal? Is the setup working, or is it hung?

And, if so, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,

Does the system have a bios-based antivirus detection scheme and have you
disabld it? If not, you should.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications. Also bear in mind that PCs
designed for, sold and run fine with Win9x/Me very often do not meet
WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality requirements. This is
particularly true of many models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario
product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP,
like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite sensitive to borderline
defective or substandard hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and
hard drives) that will still support Win9x/Me.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me.
