If my current computer dies, can I install my liscensed
copy of XP onto the new computer? Or will I have to buy
another liscensed copy of XP? I have been told that once
you install XP onto a pc and activate it that you cannot
install it onto another pc even if the first pc died, your
SOL. I don't want to copy it, I just want to be able to
put it onto a different pc if the original pc dies. Is
this possible?

Thanks

it depends on which xp you have. oem is tied to one comp.
if you have a full retail version then you can do what you
want.

Greetings --

If you have a retail license for WinXP, you can transfer it to a
new machine when your current one dies. If, however, you opted to
purchase the more less expensive - and therefore much more limited -
OEM license, then you may not reuse it.

Provided it was a retail system, and not one of the OEM ones, sold with
hardware and marked 'For supply only with a New computer', you can
transfer it. Go ahead with the installation. Leave activation a few
days until all is set up, just in case you need to start over. When it
comes to activation, run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows

if it is more than 120 days since you last did it, you will find it will
go through on the net just like first time. If not, you will have to
phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and swap one
long number for another to check back as you type it in
