Install SP2 now or later

My computer isn't connected to the internet (no not this one). Will I gain any
benefits from installing SP2 or will it make no difference in the way my
machine runs? The machine runs fine as it is and you know what they say about
if it ain't broke don't fix it.

But that's not true. SP2 is mainly focused on security. Your OS might run
your applications without a problem, but that doesn't automatically mean
that you're well protected without SP2, because you're not. So one could say
that there is something broken on your system, which is security. It's all
about how important security is for you. I have a machine that is online
24/7, lots of stuff on the machine is private and my wife runs an online
store on her machine. For me security is a top priority and therefore I will
do everything possible to increase it.

Improved security features are the bulk of SP2.
However, I can notice an improvement in speed with SP2. Everything seems
to be a little zippier. Others are claiming this also.
That'd be your call if you wanted it for that.
I'm sure someone is going to disagree with me, so stay tuned!

I don't see any benefit for you.

Hi,

Yes, I know what they say. In this case, the adage may hold as well. SP2 is
all about internet security. For a stand-alone machine that is never
connected to the 'net, there isn't much. Most of the critical updates
included are there to patch known exploits, again this is only important on
a connected system. I doubt there is any need to update this system provided
you ensure that any content transported to it via floppy or CD is clean.

Yes, several people are saying this, but I think it's more between their
ears then on their computer. I don't notice any difference at all.

I've got to admit I was a little brainwashed.
Everybody said it was so, so maybe I'm just imagining it's faster. :-)

Perceptions are meaningless, without critical benchmarking there is really
no way to tell.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say. The point is that the brain works in
mysterious ways and it happens all too often that it fools us.

I'm on cable which is hot to the internet all the time. I used to turn off
my computer when not using it to protect it somewhat. Now I have my cable
modem plugged into a surge protector with individual power switches which
allows me to depower my cable modem when I'm not interested in the internet.
I turn it back on when I want to go online. So far, no problems. Anyone
see any problem with that?

Darell--

There is absolutely no problem with that, but if you deploy AV protection
and update your definitions as regularly as they are out, for exampley use
Norton Intelligent Updater if you were using NAV, and have a decent software
firewall, and a hardware firewall, you shouldn't have to turn it on and off
but if it makes you feel better than do it by all means.

The subject of your message was "Install SP2 nor or later." I couldn't
make the connection of your logical cable modem question to that, but at any
rate I'd install SP2 now because I'm not sure how Win Up V4 on SP1 is going
to hold up to the August rush tomorrow.

You can download XP SP2 RTM here Darrell now; it was released to the public
a little while ago.--Enjoy.

No, that was the subject of my message. The message you replied to was a reply
to a reply to my message.
