Infrared Comms Problem

I've been attempting to use infrared ports to transfer data between my PC
and my laptop.
(please don't ask why - it's just a Project....:)
I think I've setup XP correctly - it says the infrared port is functioning,
and it's detected by the laptop when I bring it in range, but I can't send
files from the laptop - I get message "The recipient device is not ready to
receive".
Also, I'm unable to get the taskbar IR icon to appear, even though the
appropriate option is checked under the IR settings.
I'm pretty certain it's a problem with XP, as when I dual boot the PC into
Win98 I can communicate with the laptop perfectly OK.
Any ideas on how I can convince XP to get its act together?

Thanks, Len

Oh, DUH . . . if I had half a brain, I'd be dangerous.
I eventually thought of checking the event log and found that the
prerequisite Workstation service hadn't been started.
