For an english system, it would most likely be at c:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

When I go to ...1033 I get MSMAP132.DLL

What now? and what do you mean "english system"?

For my Outlook 2003 I can find it via Start -> Programs -> Microsoft
Office -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Inbox Repair Tool.

If you can't find it there, search your Program Files for SCANPST.EXE

Use Roady's post because I took the path from a Windows XP/Office 2003
install and not Windows XP/Office 2007. To save you from finding his
response to you...

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\

And to answer the question, the "1033" can change depending on what language
your operating system/programs are purchased in. (e.g. Spanish, German,
Japanese, .etc)

Why do you want to use scanpst; did you get a message that told you to
run it? If so, it should have given you the name and path of the PST
file to scan.

You can also find your PST files in Control Panel | Mail -> Data Files.

In Outlook I have received the following message---"Errors have been detected
in the file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local settings\Application
data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail applications
and use the inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in
the file. For more information about the inbox repair tool, see help."

There you have the answer; the file to scan is
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

When I enter this file I receive the following answer: "This file is in use
by another application. Close Microsoft Oulook and all other mail enabled
applications, and try again."

Microsoft Oulook is closed and there are no other applications open.

What now? And incidentally thank you for your help.

Are you sure? Open the Task Manager and examine the Processes tab. If you
see OUTLOOK.EXE, it's still running. If you have a PDA cradled, it's still
running. If you have Google Desktop Search indexing your PST, it may have a
lock on the PST.

I am given all kinds of warnings if I stop the process. Will I lose data
and/or have a difficult time re-starting it?

You *will* have to stop the Outlook process one way or another; either
with the Task Manager, or by shutting down Windows. This may have been
the cause in the first place that the PST file needs checking for errors.

Once your PST file is recovered, make sure that you take regular backups.

It is not likely that the PST will be damaged further by stopping the
process. After stopping, repair the PST. If that goes well, then you
should be able to restart Outlook and access the data.

Your next task will be to find out why Outlook is not ending. Try start
Outlook in Safe Mode (Start | Run | outlook.exe /safe). Is it ending
normally this way? If so, an add-on is stopping Outlook from terminating

I have inputted the the file you suggested for scanpst to scan but it tells
me "the file does not exist". I'm using Outlook 2007 on a Windows Vista
system. Any further help would be appreciated.
