I noticed recently text files were identified by an AOL
Icon. Previously they had an "e". I uninstalled
Microsoft IE and inserted the IE 6 Service Pack 1 CD-ROM
to reinstall.

Every time I attempt to reinstall, I receive the
following message:
A previous installation has pending work requiring a
boot. You need to restart your computer to compete the
installation before running IE. Setup will now close.

I click OK, and the message is gone. I have rebooted and
gone through the process only to receive the message
again.

Please advise.

If you are using AOL you have to contact their technical support group: AOL
uses proprietary software.

Presuming that you are are running Windows XP ( as you are posting to an XP
newsgroup) - you CANNOT uninstall IE. All the "uninstall" function in
Add/Remove Windows Components does is to remove the program icon from all
the menus and desktops. It does NOT uninstall Internet Explorer.
You can however repair the installation: - try here.

Perhaps I phrased my initial statement improperly. I went
to Add/Remove Programs, and removed Microsoft IE. I
retained the Icon on the Desktop, however. Everytime I
attempt to reinstall ie6setup, Service pack 1, I receive
the message. Corrective action?

As a previous poster explained, Internet Explorer 6 is preinstalled in all
versions of Windows XP and cannot be removed. To provide computer
manufacturers more flexibility in configuring desktop versions of Windows
XP, Microsoft has made it possible for OEMs, administrators, and users to
remove user access to Internet Explorer while leaving the Internet Explorer
code intact and fully functional, to make maintain the functionality of
programs and operating system functions that rely on it. The entry in Add or
Remove Programs removes user access to Internet Explorer.

If you want to reinstall Internet Explorer, you will have to reinstall
Windows XP, as explained here:

"How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378&Product=winxp

After performing the above procedure, you must visit Windows Update since
all security updates and other fixes will need to be reinstalled. Among the
updates available to you at that time will be the updates to Internet
Explorer.

Read my reply. You CANNOT uninstall IE in Windows XP!
The Add/Remove function does NOT uninstall IE!

Well, I corrected the Icons by calling AOL. However, when
I double click ie6setup Icon on the Desktop I continue
receiving the message. I believe it is because 6 SP1 is
included with Windows XP SP1. The response is normal. I
will remove the ie6setup Icon from the Desktop. I had
directions of reinstall or Repair IE and OE in Windows XP
since 3/6/03. I am well aware of not being able to
completely removing IE from the computer. Thanks for the
assistance and corrective action.
