I cannot browse to microsoft's website with Explorer, which
I need to do to check for windows updates etc. I can get
there very quickly with netscape, but the auto-update does
not seem to work with netscape. Explorer just times out
when I enter the ms web adddress. Explores seems to run
slower than netscape with other websites.

I am running XP home. I have run virus checks - I have
Norton antivirus, which automatically updates. I also ran
an online virus check from Symantac's website. No viruses.
Any suggestions? I can't seem to get any help from
Microsoft - there is no way to get a message to them -
rather frustrating.

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.
