IE 6.0 Unable to install

I am trying to install IE6.0 on a machine that is happily
running IE5.5, yet it fails every time.
Sometimes I get a message saying "Unable to install some
components of IR6.0" and then listing every part of it,
sometimes saying "A previously started installation is
incomplete, you must reboot...." then a pop-up : Resume
Installation? ... then Unable to install some components...
HELP!!
 
Windows version? Was an install of IE6-SP1 attempted before? Was Windows
reinstalled after this? Are you attempting the install via Windows Update?
