Identify unknown PCI devices

After installing XP home from the Dell recovery disks I had a number of
unknown devices in Device Manager. Once I got on the Internet, XP found
them all except for the "Video controller" and "Video controller (VGA
compatible)". I found this article
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=298837) but my registry does not match
the one described in the article (there is no enum tab under
h_key_local_machine). Anyone point me to how to find the manufacturer of
these controllers? By the way, the machine runs like a top... The Dell
disk and web site have about 20 alternative display adapter drivers, no mean
task to unzip, try it, unzip another, try it, unzip...
TIA,
Al

AIDA32 is a tool which should do what you want. Unfortunately it is no
longer being developed, and the official home page is down, but it may be
availabe from for instance http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html

A 16-bit version of the same program is also bundled with
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I also have a small program called ctpci.exe on a DOS floppy, but I am not
sure where I got it. Do a Google or send me a mail if you want to try it.

Among the cd's that came with your Dell system will be the Dell
Resources cd. This is not the cd that says "Operating System". Install
it and it will find the proper drivers on your system and give you the
ability to install them. Drivers for the modem, if you have one, are
usually on a separate cd.

When you received your Dell, you probably received an OEM Dell Windows XP Operating System
CD, and you ALSO probably received a Dell Drivers and Utilities CD which has the drivers
you need. If you did not upgrade at the time of purchase, you probably do not have a
display adapter card, but instead have an Intel graphics controller integrated on your
motherboard, whose drivers would be on that Dell Utilities and Drivers CD. Insert that
CD, and it should autoplay to a screen which will allow you to select what you need.

To be sure of the hardware, download EVEREST free from
www.lavalys.com and run the program. It will report on all
hardware and installed software on the computer. It even
will include links to updates and hardware model and serial
numbers.
