ICS Problem

A

Andrew Dimech

I have two networked PCs running WinXP. I can share files
between these PCs and Ping each other. However the
internet is only working on the ICS Host PC.

From Internet Explorer of the ICS client, I cleared all
of the boxes on the screen at Tools | Internet
Options | Connections | LAN Settings

When I right click the Local Area Network connection and
click Status | Support | Details. It have the following
settings:

ICS host computer
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

ICS client computer
IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

These settings seem according to specification however I
still can't get hold of the problem.

I've been trying to solve the problem for the past week.

Please Help.

What is the exact IP address on the client?

These tests should help find the problem:

1. Open a command prompt window on the client and enter these lines.
Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

2. Enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on the client. They
should both take you to the Google web page:

http://216.239.39.100
http://www.google.com

Hi

Do you have a firewall on the ICS host? If you do is it Zonealarm by any
chance? If it is you need to reduce the Internet Setting to Medium for the
client to be able to get internet access.

The Client's IP address is automatically assigned by
DHCP. I tried:

1. Using the command prompt

ping 192.168.0.1 -- It worked
ping 216.239.39.100 -- Request Timed Out
ping www.google.com -- Request Timed Out

2. Addresses in Internet Explorer on the client

Thanks for those results, Andrew. It appears that the LAN is OK but
that ICS isn't working correctly on the host computer. Try this:

1. Un-share the host's shared Internet connection.

2. Re-share it, making sure that you're sharing the right one. If you
have a PPPoE DSL connection, share the PPPoE connection, not the
Ethernet connection.

3. Reboot the client computer.

If there are still problems, open a command prompt window (Start | Run
| cmd) on the host and enter this command:

ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt

Then copy and paste the contents of the "ipconfig.txt" file into your
reply.

Is that the complete Ipconfig output? If so, then
I'm afraid that I can't suggest anything more, since I don't
understand your setup.

All that it shows is what appears to be a DSL connection on something
called "Nextgen.Net". There's no sign of an Ethernet connection, a
local area network, or Internet Connection Sharing.

Even the information that it shows looks odd to me, because the
default gateway has an invalid value of 0.0.0.0.
