I messed up my Outlook. Can I fix it easily?

I have had Outlook (from Office 2000 Standard) working for awhile. Yesterday
I installed an old version of Internet Mail and News (just the mail portion),
and now Outlook won't start. I told the Internet Mail install NOT to
overwrite newer files, but now I get the following error message when I try
to start Outlook:

"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater. You can install
Outlook Express 5.0 by running IE5Setup.exe from the Internet Explorer folder
where you installed Outlook, or download it from the Internet Explorer site
on the Microsoft We"

It then says "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the
wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other messaging
software. Please reinstall Outlook."

I tried running IE5Setup.exe (I happened to have it archived in my personal
downloads from yesteryear), but it said a newer version of Internet Explorer
was already installed, and the installer then quit.

I also tried manually copying over the MAPI32.DLL from another computer
running a newer, more robust version of Outlook on Windows XP Pro, but I
still get the same error messages.

How can I fix this without overwriting all of my existing Outlook data (i.e.
Address Book, Calendar, emails I've saved into custom folders, etc.)? If I
do a full installation, will it erase all of this?

Thanks in advance.

If you've installed any applications that use the MAPI transport after
installing Outlook 2000, you may need to have your mapi32.dll file updated.
This should occur automatically using a new feature to detect MAPI conflicts
(a program called fixmapi.exe). The next time you start Outlook you may get
a message like: "A recently installed program may cause problems with
Microsoft Office or other e-mail-enabled applications" It then asks "Do you
want Outlook to resolve this problem?" You should click the "Yes" button.

In some instances, however, the fixmapi utility may not function correctly
with Outlook open and you get an error message. In that case, exit Outlook
and reboot to ensure that no applications using mapi are open. Then find and
run fixmapi.exe manually.

fixmapi didn't do it. Any other suggestions? I even copied over a
mapi32.dll and fixmapi.exe from a machine running Outlook 2002...but that
didn't work.

Thanks again!

Rename any MAPI32.DLL's and run Office Detect and Repair.
Why in the world would you install IMN? Do you have any idea how out of date
that is?

I know, I know. I actually was trying to see if it would be an
alternative
to Outlook since I'm having problems with automatically querying for new
emails (I have to manually click Send and Receive EVERY time...and enter
my
password EVERY time I want to check email.)

Anyway, where is "Office Detect and Repair"? I didn't find it in my start
menu.

Thanks again,
Michael

Can I run this from the Microsoft Word Help menu (I can't run it from

Anything else I should plan for?

You will need your installation disk. You can run it from any Office
application.

Most people use the current version of Outlook Express (what IMN evolved
into) to test things if they're having trouble with Outlook.

Will running this either way (through Office or through the Contol Panel)
just fix my problem, or does it reinstall Outlook? My big concern is that I
don't want to lose all of my information stored in Outlook.

I started the process via the Control Panel, and it said the "Repair Office"
will set it back to what it was at my original installation. Does that mean
it will overwrite my Inbox and other folders too?

Thanks again. You guys are a great help!

It sort of does both. It replaces those files in the Office installation
that have been changed since the installation point, pulling them from the
installation CD. It should not deleet any of your existing Outlook items.
However, to be on the safe side, you should make a copy of your PST file.

No, but save a copy if you wish. It sure can't hurt.

file?

I'd make a copy of all my PSTs to be safe. In fact, I do so regularly.
