I can't search for files ! !

When I click to search within a foldr or on a HD drive, the "search companion
doggie" animated character appears, but the rest of the left side of the
screen is a solid blue. In other words, NO MENU appears for file names to
search for. So I can't do any searches.....

Wen I click on the DOGGIE, it just scratches itself.

Any ideas why? Does this have to do with Java Script?
